Look at what finally happened...

Archbishop Sean O'Malley called it a "heartwarming sign" after three years of fallout from the scandal, which saw numerous priests defrocked. However, the fund-raising campaign still fell far short of the $17 million the archdiocese raised before the scandal erupted in early 2002. Donations plummeted to about $8.

I found this while looking on the internet...

The increase suggests schools are succeeding in expanding their donor pools. But while total alumni giving rose 2 percent to $6. 7 billion, the percentage of alumni donating fell to 12.

The remaining 8 percent was contributed by religious and other organizations. Though the increase in overall contributions barely outpaced inflation, survey director Ann Kaplan of CAE called the results "not too bad," considering the decline in foundation grants, which she expects to turn around. The overall increase followed zero growth in 2003, and a decline in 2002 — the first since 1988.
